Hermes Agent
A private, single-user automation assistant running on its owner's own server. It is not a public service: there is no sign-up, no dashboard for third parties, and exactly one Google account is connected.
01
What it is
Hermes Agent is a personal assistant built by Johan Thury to take routine work off his desk. It runs on a small server in his own network in Belgium, on hardware he owns and administers. Its job is narrow and practical: find the confirmation mails that matter, turn them into calendar appointments, keep track of documents, and answer questions about the state of his own infrastructure.
Nothing is multi-tenant. The application has one user, the owner, and it acts only on his instructions — either an explicit request in the chat interface, or a scheduled job he configured himself (a morning briefing at 06:30, a weekly backup report).
02
Why it asks for Google access
The assistant connects to a single Google account — the owner's — through OAuth. The scopes it requests and the reason for each:
- Gmail (
gmail.readonly,gmail.modify,gmail.send) — to search the inbox for order confirmations, tickets and reservations, to label what it has processed, and to send mail when the owner asks it to. - Google Calendar (
calendar) — to read upcoming appointments and to create or update the events the owner requests. - Google Drive, Docs and Sheets (
drive, documents, spreadsheets) — to open and edit the files the owner points it to.
Access is read-write because the point of the assistant is to finish the task, not to describe it. Every scope is used on the owner's own data only. No Google user data is shared with third parties, used for advertising, or used to train machine-learning models. See the privacy policy for the full statement, including the Limited Use commitments.
